Plain-English definitions of the navigation jargon used across this index page.
- Site MapHTML site map
- A single page that lists every public route on a website, organised by section, intended for human readers. Distinct from the machine-readable /sitemap.xml feed used by search engines.
- XML Sitemapsitemap.xml
- A structured XML feed at /sitemap.xml that Google and Bing crawl to discover URLs. Lists every public route with last-modified dates and priority hints. Submitted to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Hub Pagecategory landing
- A top-level category page that sits one click below the homepage and links out to many leaf pages. /trades, /locations, /cost-guides and /compliance are all hub pages on TradeMatch.
- Internal Linkinlink
- A hyperlink from one page on the same domain to another. Search engines use internal-link graphs to understand site structure and distribute crawl budget. Site maps are dense internal-link surfaces by design.
- Crawl Depthclick depth
- The minimum number of clicks from the homepage required to reach a given page. Pages more than 3 clicks deep are crawled less often by Google. HTML site maps reduce crawl depth for every page they link.
- Breadcrumbcrumbs
- A navigation aid that shows the user's position in the site hierarchy — typically Home > Section > Subsection > Current page. Paired with BreadcrumbList JSON-LD for rich-result eligibility.

The questions homeowners ask before they commit.
Why does TradeMatch have an HTML site map as well as an XML one?
The XML site map at /sitemap.xml is the machine-readable feed Google and Bing crawl. This HTML site map is for humans — homeowners and tradespeople browsing the directory who want a single page that lists every public hub. Both indexes pull from the same source-of-truth data in lib/seo.js, so adding a new trade or city automatically lands in both.
How is the directory organised?
Three primary axes: by trade (48 categories — plumbers, electricians, builders, roofers and more), by city (68 UK cities with local cost data and verified vendors), and by compliance regime (15 statutory schemes from Gas Safe to Water Regulations 1999). A fourth axis covers the chartered architectural-technology surface for design, planning permission and party-wall work.
How often is the site map updated?
Daily revalidation via Next.js ISR. Every new trade, city, compliance topic, blog post or guide added to the lib/seo.js / lib/data datasets is reflected within 24 hours. Major surface launches (new compliance topic, new trade) are also pushed to /sitemap.xml and re-submitted to Google Search Console the same day.
I cannot find a specific page — where else should I look?
Use the search box in the page header, or jump straight to the most likely hub: /find-a-trade for the searchable directory of vendors, /post-job to start a job request, /cost-guides for pricing data, /trades for trade-specific landing pages, /locations for city pages, /compliance for regulatory guidance, or /questions for the long-tail Q&A index.
Is every page on the site listed here?
Every public, indexed hub and category landing page is listed. Long-tail leaves — for example the 2,784 location×trade combinations under /trades/[trade]/[city] and /cost-guides/[trade]/[city] — are linked through their parent hub rather than enumerated individually here, which keeps the page lightweight while still providing one click of crawl depth from the index. The full enumeration is in /sitemap.xml.
How do I report a broken link or missing page?
Email [email protected] with the URL or use the contact form at /contact. We treat every dead-link report as a P1 — broken navigation directly damages homeowner trust and tradespeople's lead flow.
