With electric vehicle sales surging, a home EV charger is becoming essential. Here is what you need to know about installation, costs and available grants.

| Charger Type | Supply + Install |
|---|---|
| 7kW tethered (with cable) | £800–£1,200 |
| 7kW untethered (socket) | £700–£1,100 |
| 22kW charger (3-phase) | £1,200–£2,000 |
| Smart charger (app-controlled) | £900–£1,400 |
Popular brands include Pod Point, Ohme, Zappi and Easee. Most home chargers are 7kW, which adds about 30 miles of range per hour of charging.
The OZEV grant (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) offers up to £350 towards the cost of a home chargepoint for:
- Homeowners with off-street parking
- Tenants with landlord permission
- Flat owners
Your installer must be OZEV-approved to apply. On TradeMatch, we verify OZEV approval as part of our vetting process.
Parking location — The charger must be installed where you park. If your driveway is far from the fuse board, cabling costs increase. Power supply — Most homes can support a 7kW charger without upgrades. Older properties may need a fuse board upgrade. Smart features — Smart chargers let you schedule charging during off-peak tariffs (e.g. 2am–5am at 7p/kWh vs 28p/kWh peak).
